Adapted from the amazing work by @DaveJudgement JumpStart TLA/TLE Tight
✨ JumpStart: Avatar Box (Custom Themes)
📌 Note
The foundation comes from the Avatar: The Last Airbender JumpStart themes released in November 2025. The initial work was done by @DaveJudgement . I have taken his work, tweaked some of the themes increasing the power level slightly. I have also made a few more powerful themes that are centred around key characters.
🎯 Reasons for Building This Box (by @DaveJudgement)
Consistency with previous “tight” boxes
Earlier sets (JMP, J22, J25) often had up to four variants per theme, meaning as many as six rare/mythic cards could appear. Some “mythic” themes were far stronger than “common” ones.
To balance this, I gathered all the exciting rares, cut filler cards, and created optimized theme... ensuring the TLA/TLE themes align with the “tight” philosophy I used for every other box I've made.Reducing repetition found in retail themes
On average, only two cards per theme were unique (excluding lands). The other ten cards were heavily repeated in TLA/TLE:- 5–7 cards appeared in 2–4 themes
- 3–5 cards appeared in 5–10 themes(!)
For example: Deadly Precision and Giant Koi showed up in 8 themes, while Path to Redemption appeared in 10.
Since repetition was a major criticism of set-aligned JumpStart releases (“games felt too same-y”), I restructured the box to fix this.
⚙️ Principles of Design
Original
- Follow “tight” theme patterns
- 8 lands
- ≤8 creatures
- 4–5 non-creature spells (removal, tricks, role-players)
- ~1 mythic and ~2 rares
- Extra color-fixing if gold cards are included
The above are loose guidelines, however these have been stretched slightly,
- Limit repetition across the box
- Only one copy of each Uncommon, Rare, and Mythic
- At most two copies of any Common
Have become more relaxed with repetitions of commons and uncommons, but still try to keep rares and mythics spread.
- Preserve original theme identity
- Retail TLA/TLE JumpStart + Beginner Box contained 11 themes per color (plus "Shrines")
- Reduced to 7 themes per color (plus "Shrines") while keeping recognizable archetypes
I have branched out in several themes, and am making a few more of my own. I am ok with themes being at slightly different power levels, as I plan to grade them and it will allow players of different skill to have more matched games.
- Stay true to archetypes
- Each 2-color limited archetype (20 total themes)
- Additional mono-color archetypes (15 mono-colored themes plus "Shrines")
- Special challenges: Some themes still appear same-y due to the set's source material. But they contain mostly different cards.
- White (Ally-heavy: Wg, Wr, Mono-White)
- Red (Attacking-focused: Rb, 2x mono-red)
📊 Results
- 36 total themes, each feeling distinct, even if there's some overlap in play-style.
- Designed to keep gameplay fresh across dozens or hundreds of sessions. In fact, there are 176,715 possible matchups just with this box.
🗓️ Current Status: “final” beta build. Community feedback is welcome!
- This build is theory-crafted, aiming for >90% accuracy to the “gold master” release in January.
- As of Nov 12, 2025, release is still 1.5 weeks away. Have 31 total themes (6 per color + Shrines)
- As of Nov 17, 2025, release is coming this week. Realigned the theme names and colors, and done some rebalancing. Have added a 7th theme per color, up to 36 themes total. Added tokens and Theme cards.
- As of Dec 11, 2025, cards have been reviewed against data from 17Lands. Less powerful cards have been balanced against more powerful ones. Some themes gave changed (Bumi us now GU, and Kyoshi is Mono-G). Additional color fixing has been added to all 36 themes with Uncharted Haven from FDN. Aang's theme has been focused on enters/leaves effects. Consider this the final beta.
- As of Jan 9, 2026, Green and Black themes have been re-arranged to be more thematically consistent. This came primarily from the Azula and Toph themes not featuring their Mythic versions. Re-arrangements the themes brought (1) Azula to be more associated with discarding, (2) Bad Advice to be more about Lessons and Nobles, (3) Toph to be more about Earthbending, (4) Bumi To be more about Large Creatures, and (5) replacing Big Creatures with Learning. Also, Sparring Dummy was moved to Learning, and Barrels of Blasting Jelly were moves to Shrines.
- In Mid-January, I'll implement suggestions and edits one last time, and mark this is done/1.0.
💡 Long-Term Vision
I want this box to be:
- A definitive take on the format
- A set players can revisit year after year
- Fully compatible for mix-and-match with other “tight” boxes I’ve built
