Concept
Memories of Modern recreates Modern as players experienced it before Modern Horizons, with 2018 as its focal point. It is not only a collection of top meta decks, popular pet decks, and cards people enjoyed registering.
The main card cutoff is 13 June 2019, immediately before Modern Horizons. Stoneforge Mystic is an intentional exception because it is central to the format story and improve the cube’s connective tissue.
Structure
It is 528 cards drafted in packs of 22 with two picks per pack. A 40 card deck is still the minimum, so this enables extra drafting of fixing and sideboard cards, as well as extra risky synergy picks that may not come together
Goal
The goal is to make recognizable Modern decks draftable while finding some room for pet modern cards. Repeated copies of iconic staples and engines are used to enable the drafting of true modern archetypes. Supported decks have meaningful whole-cube inventories, but flexible two-color good-stuff decks, and smaller packages are also a feature. Lightning Bolt, Thoughtseize, Path to Exile, Snapcaster Mage, Tarmogoyf, and similar glue should connect strategies rather than force every pick into a package.
Post-board games should play differently without allowing one narrow card to erase an opponent’s strategy. The cube favors answerable, modal, temporary, or broadly useful interaction over hard shutdowns such as Rest in Peace or Stony Silence. Artifact decks, graveyard decks, spell combo, go-wide strategies, Burn, and big-mana/land decks all have post-board pressure and counterplay.
