Welcome to my Pauper Cube!

Welcome to my pauper cube!!! This cube has been a labor of love for more than a decade and an attempt at having a powerful draft environment using only cards that have been printed at common. I love playing and building decks with self imposed restrictions. I wanted to show that a cube with all commons can be just as fun and immersive as other more typical cubes. Over the years it has changed a lot but the core value of playing with powerful commons remains. I wanted this cube to be both skill intensive and easy to pick up and play. The first picks with this cube are not always as obvious as it would be in your standard powered/unpowered (i.e., legacy) cube environments.

I have had this cube for a long time now and through many years of playing it with friends I have removed some mechanics that are not healthy for this type of environment. My main goal is for it to be fun to draft and play, but some mechanics and cards make the game and play patterns a lot less engaging.

  • Games are usually won with creature combat, one for one removal is plentiful but boardwipes are not.
  • Two color decks are the norm, there is plenty of fixing but it comes at a cost as they all enter tapped.
  • The buyback mechanic has been removed from this cube with the worst offenders being Disturbed Burial, Sprout Swarm, and Capsize. Buyback is a mechanic that leads to non-games and is very boring in my opinion.
  • Several other mechanics have been intentionally omitted from the cube; namely, the Monarch and cards that take the initiative. Both of these multiplayer mechanics have been removed for power level and complexity reasons.
  • With very few exceptions (Striped Riverwinder), hexproof and shroud have been extremely limited. I want to encourage players to take game actions and interact with their opponents.
  • Cube is singleton, but functional reprints are acceptable if they support established archetypes.
  • As with any cube like this, there is the usual aggro, midrange and control archetypes peppered throughout the color pairings.

The cube was featured on the UberCube podcast!! Both myself and host Uber Bear give an overview of this cube and talk pauper!

Powerful Pauper

Give it a listen and also don't forget to listen to the many other episodes of the podcast where hosts Uber Bear, May Myagic, and Stu talk about, you guessed it, cube!

Thank you for taking some time to look at my cube. I always love to hear feedback on ways that the cube can be improved, and the draft experience can be made even better.
