Draft New Phyrexia
New Phyrexia (NPH) is the third set in the Scars of Mirrodin block, released in 2011. Its primary Limited format was NPH–MBS–SOM draft, with one pack of New Phyrexia followed by Mirrodin Besieged and Scars of Mirrodin. The set introduces Phyrexian mana, allowing players to pay life instead of colored mana for many spells and creating unusually explosive gameplay. Compared to earlier formats in the block, New Phyrexia increases the overall power level and speed of the draft environment while supporting both Infect and traditional damage-based decks. Artifact synergies remain central, removal is plentiful, and many archetypes can leverage powerful splash cards thanks to the flexibility of Phyrexian mana. Successful drafting often requires balancing synergy with raw card quality and recognizing when Infect is truly open.
