Draft old-school Magic where creatures, removal, card advantage, and careful combat matter more than elaborate synergy packages.

Draft Ninth Edition

Ninth Edition (9ED) is a 350-card core set released in July 2005, built entirely from reprints rather than around new set mechanics. Its 9ED/9ED/9ED draft environment predates modern signpost-uncommon design, so decks are defined more by what each color does well than by prescribed synergy themes. Blue stands out for card advantage and flyers, black for removal, white for defense and evasive creatures, green for efficient bodies, and red for burn and aggression. Contemporary Limited analysis describes a relatively slow environment where 3- and 4-toughness creatures can stall the ground and card advantage becomes especially valuable. Fixing is modest: Rampant Growth helps green splash, while options such as Fellwar Stone and the rare painlands exist, but focused two-color decks are generally more reliable.

Archetypes

A quick reference for the main decks and strategies to look for while drafting this set cube.

Flyers Control

Stall the ground with defensive creatures, gain card advantage, and eventually win through a steady stream of flyers.

Removal Midrange

Combine black and red removal with aggressive and utility creatures, clearing blockers so your threats can keep connecting.

Efficient Creatures

Curve out with some of the format’s more efficient creatures and use combat tricks to force damage through crowded boards.

Low-Curve Aggro

Keep the creature curve low and attack early, using burn and effects that push damage through before defensive decks can stabilize.

Tempo

Pair blue’s card advantage and tempo tools with red burn and pingers; powerful when it comes together, but harder to assemble consistently.
